The Greenback Youth Football Organization (GYFO) welcomed Polk County to Cooper Field on Saturday, but managed only one win in four contests.
Polk County 48, GYFO Crickets 14 The Greenback Crickets (0-7) could not stop the running game of Polk County (5-2). After trading fumble recoveries to open the contest, Polk County struck first with a 60-yard touchdown run. The conversion failed, but the Bobcats set the stage early for a scoring marathon. Greenback struck back on their next possession with a 70-yard, Holden Willis scoring run. That conversion also failed, tying the score at 6-6. By the second quarter Polk County's offense began hitting on all cylinders, exploding for three scoring drives and one successful conversion. By halftime, the Bobcats held a 20-point lead. After giving up two more scores in the third quarter, Greenback fought back with another Willis touchdown run, this one from 60 yards out. Willis added a successful conversion but the youngest Cherokees trailed 40-14. The Bobcats struck once more in the third quarter to force the win by rule. Willis was Greenback's offensive player of the game with 155 yards rushing, two touchdowns, and one PAT. Defensively, Willis had six tackles.
Polk County Hoppers 12 GYFO Hoppers 38 The Cherokees (6-1) won in convincing fashion for the only Greenback victory of the day. Leading by eight at halftime, Greenback shut down the Bobcats (1-6) in the second half and capitalized on a powerful offensive effort. Grenback's Josh Edwards rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Cherokees, followed by Breeden Gilbert with 47 yards and one touchdown. Running back Cody Alexander added two touchdowns. Jake Allison had a two-point conversion. Defensively, Gilbert led with six tackles, followed by Alexander with five and Matthew Gilmore with four. Gilmore and Colbe Cagle both had fumble recoveries.
Polk County Cutters 18, GYFO Cutters 6 The Greenback Cutters (2-5) suffered a heart wrenching loss to the visiting Polk County Cutters (3-4) after putting up a valiant effort with only twelve players available for the game. Greenback had the momentum late, but a crucial Polk County stop on defense altered the game from that point on. After falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter, Greenback's Hunter Willis recovered a second-quarter fumble that set up a Kevin Ogle four-yard touchdown. The conversion failed, but the score was knotted at 6-6, where it stayed until the fourth quarter. Driving the field for nearly six minutes in the final stanza, the Cherokees hoped to put the game away. But facing fourth and one from the Polk County five yard line the Bobcats stuffed Ogle to force a turnover on downs. One play later, Polk County broke free for a 95-yard touchdown run to break the tie, and with just two minutes to play, the Cherokees were forced to answer, down 12-6. Driving the field moments later, Willis was intercepted at midfield to end the threat for Polk County. The Bobcats added a final score seconds later for the final tally. Tylor Jones led the Greenback offense with five receptions for 105 yards, all from Willis. Ogle led in rushing with 70 yards.
Polk County 46, GYFO Juniors 16 Greenback's oldest team never threatened in a blowout loss to the conference leading Bobcats (7-0). Trailing 32-0 at the half, the Cherokees (4-3) were dominated by a Polk County group that out-sized and out-muscled Greenback on both sides of the ball. Cherokee tailback Jordan Anderson broke into the end zone twice on the day, but those scores came late in the contest. Midway through the fourth quarter, Polk County tacked on a final score that ended the game by rule. Struggling with injuries after opening the season 4-0, Greenback's Junior team has dropped its last three.
The Cherokees travel to (McMinn) Central on Saturday for week 8 of the season. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
