The Greenback Cherokees (3-4, 1-2) are entering Friday night against a non-District 3(A) opponent, but they aren't looking at it that way.
"We're approaching it as important as a district game. We need the win for the playoffs," Greenback Head Coach Justin Ridge said. The 'Kees will have to travel a long way for this game as they'll face Lookout Valley, located on the southern side of Chattanooga.
The Yellow Jackets (5-1) are ranked sixth in the newest edition of the Associated Press High School poll and are led in their spread offense by quarterback Tay Vaughn Wynn.
"He's their best player," Ridge said of the QB. The coach said Lookout Valley runs a spread type of offense, but it's not much of an option offense. There is, he added, a "little bit" of misdirection in it. So far, the Yellow Jackets have defeated Chattanooga Christian 44-7, Grace Baptist Academy 24-13, Whitwell 18-7, Taft Youth Center 38-0 and Silverdale Academy 28-6. They lost to Signal Mountain 49-38.
As for his team, Ridge said he wants to see more consistency. "We have a couple good games and then a bad game," he said, adding the Cherokees need to cut down on the mistakes to become more of a consistent offense.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Lookout Valley in Chattanooga.
