Despite massive storms throughout East Tennessee, the Lenoir City Panthers were able to get their game in Friday night at West. The outcome wasn't positive for the Panthers, however, as the Rebels stormed past Lenoir City 28-0.
The first quarter went off with out a hitch, but the Panthers were unable to score. Each team traded out possessions, but it was West that had the most opportunities. Lenoir City took its first possession and Cody Wright got the nod and picked up 12 yards for a first down. The Panthers weren't able to do much more and had to punt on fourth down. The Rebels had two offensive series, but the Panther defense and six West penalties hindered the Rebel offense.
At the end of the first quarter the storms reached Knoxville and an hour and a half delay ensued. The second quarter started off well for the Panther defense as Josh Layfield intercepted a West pass. Lenoir City took over on its own 12 yardline, which proved to be hard to overcome as the visitors were forced into a three-and-out.
The Panther punt was returned 45 yards for a touchdown, but was negated due to a holding penalty. That didn't matter, however, as the Rebels were determined to get the six points back. It only took four plays to do just that, as Christian Francis took it into the endzone on the quarterback sneak. The snap on the point after was bad, and the pass was deflected in the endzone. West took the lead nonetheless, 6-0.
On its ensuing drive, Lenoir City had a costly 10-yard chop block penalty that took back a first down by Austin Dotson. The Panthers couldn't find the big play to get the yardage back and were forced to punt.
The Rebels came back and marched down the field from the 50. The Lenoir City defense saw heavy doses of Ivan Freeman and Tanner Thompson running the ball as West got the ball inside the 10 yardline. But, Matthew Studwell was able to sack Francis for a big loss. West came back with a trick play, though, as Thompson found Alex Miller for a 15-yard TD pass. Dylan Baylosis took the ball in for the two-point conversion to give the Rebels a 14-0 lead at the half.
Second half turnovers cost the Panthers dearly as West was able to put up 14 points. Lenoir City was able to get good field position in the second half and was down the field. The Panthers took the ball from their own 20, with Wright picking up the first down to the 45 yard line. Hall then found Preston Craig on the screen for a 14-yard pick up. Lenoir City was able to get inside the West 30-yard line but the drive ended when D'Andre Parkey came up with a huge interception for West.
The Rebels didn't have the ball long, though, as they fumbled and the Panthers' Josh Courtney recovered.
Lenoir City drove to the 15-yard line and that was it for the drive as a Hall pass fell incomplete on fourth down.
West had to punt on its next drive, but the Panthers fumbled and lost the ball. The Rebels made them pay for the turnover as they scored a two-yard touchdown from Freeman. Bullock added the point after and it was 21-0.
The fourth quarter started with another Panther drive and once again a turnover proved costly. West took the ball back and Thompson scored another six in three plays. Bullock's extra point was good and the Rebels secured the final tally.
Lenoir City finished with 150 yards of total offense. Wright led rushing with 23 yards. Hall finished 6 of 18 passing for 67 yards. West had 312 yards of offense. Freeman had 19 carries for 143 yards.
