Playing a postponed game with just four days until the next game could lead some teams to struggle with their focus. That wasn't the case for the Loudon Redskins Monday night as they rolled past Sweetwater on the road 45-0 in a game postponed from Friday due to lightning.
The Redskins visited the Wildcats just four days before their next scheduled game at Scott County, but showed no signs of overlooking the struggling Sweetwater team as the first offensive play of the game for Loudon was a 35-yard halfback pass from Devan Grissom to Josh Berry. Grissom found Berry streaking down the right sideline and the pass was good for a 35-yard touchdown. K.C. Rader added the point after and Loudon led 7-0 just three minutes into the game.
The Redskin dominance continued on the next drive as Brenden Phillips intercepted a Sweetwater pass on the first play of the drive. The Redskins couldn't find the end zone this time, however, and they settled for a 26-yard field goal by Rader to make the score 10-0 with 8:27 left in the first quarter.
The Redskin defense then forced its second three-and-out of the game, as Sweetwater was forced to punt.
This time it took just one play for the Loudon offense to find the end zone, this time on a 75-yard dash by tailback Matthew Wallace. Rader's PAT was true, giving Loudon a 17-0 advantage still just midway through the first quarter.
The second interception of the day by Loudon, this time by DeJay Johnson, set up the final score of the first quarter. Johnson took the interception back to the Sweetwater 10 and it took two plays for quarterback Wade Plemons to find his way to paydirt. Rader once again hit the PAT and Loudon led 24-0 as the first quarter expired.
The Redskins added another score in the second quarter, this time on a six-play drive that culminated in a two-yard TD run by Wallace. Rader hit the PAT and Loudon carried the 31-0 lead to halftime.
Needing just one score to put the mercy rule into effect – and thus make the clock run continuously in the second half – the Redskins got it quickly. Wallace took the opening kickoff of the second half at his own 21 yard line, weaved his way through Sweetwater defenders and bolted 79 yards for a touchdown. Eric Newman made the PAT this time, putting Loudon ahead 38-0 and the mercy rule kicked in.
The Redskins got one more score, though, as on the ensuing drive, corner Zach Sellers jumped a route in the flat, intercepted the pass and raced 49 yards for the final score of the game. Newman hit his second PAT of the game, sealing the 45-point win.
The Wildcats have struggled throughout the season, but Loudon Head Coach Jeff Harig said he still appreciates any win over Sweetwater. "I don't take beating Sweetwater for granted because I've been down here enough in the past when they've been really, really good. This has always been a good win . . . and so I won't take it for granted," he said.
Most of the Loudon starters only played a half, but Plemons finished the day completing both of his passes for 10 yards, while Grissom completed his only pass for the 35-yard TD. Plemons also carried the ball nine times for 47 yards and a TD.
Wallace carried six times for 99 yards and two scores.
The Redskins (5-2, 1-2) will return to the field Friday night on short rest when they travel to Scott County for a District 4(2A) matchup. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
