With their playoff hopes still in doubt, the Greenback Cherokees will return home to host Tellico Plains Friday night for homecoming.
The 'Kees (3-5, 1-2) fell to Lookout Valley in a game that Head Coach Justin Ridge termed important for his team's playoff hopes, and now will take on District 3(A) rival Tellico in a very important matchup.
The Bears started off the year strong, but have since tailed off a bit. They defeated Sweetwater and Sequoyah by a combined score of 61-13, but then fell to Grace Christian 24-7. After that, they defeated Coalfield 33-12, Rockwood 21-6 and Meigs County 37-8. The last two weeks, however, they've fallen to Harriman 17-13 and Polk County 27-0.
They currently sport a 5-3 overall record and a 1-2 mark inside the district.
The teams have four opponents in common – Meigs County, Rockwood, Sweetwater and Harriman – and the 'Kees have lost to three of the four. The 'Kees defeated Sweetwater 48-14 on Sept. 11. A win over Tellico would even the Cherokees' district record back to .500 with one game left in the season – a home game against district leader Grace Christian. The 'Kees haven't faced Tellico in the past eight seasons.
Game time Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cooper Field in Greenback.
