The Greenback Youth Football Organization (GYFO) played two games Sunday afternoon at (McMinn) Central and came away with two victories. Friday's stormy weather delayed Central High School's scheduled game until Saturday, which then pushed two youth contests into Sunday. The other two youth teams were scheduled to play Tuesday.
Central Hoppers 0, Greenback Hoppers 24 The Greenback Hoppers (7-1) managed a shut out en rout to their seventh victory of the season Saturday with a win over Central (2-6). Colbe Cagle led the way with five tackles, three for a loss. Breeden Gilbert followed with four tackles. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cherokees exploded late in the second for 12 points, one a 43-yard Josh Edwards run and the second an 18-yard pass from quarterback Bryce Hanley to Tyler Cullen. Hanley and Matthew Brown combined for two successful conversions. In the third quarter, Hanley connected with Cagle for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Gilbert added the two-point conversion.
Central Juniors 6, Greenback Juniors 18 The Cherokee Junior team (5-3) returned to the win column Saturday with a victory over a struggling Central team (2-6). Greenback dominated on defense, earning three interceptions and a safety. Cornerback Brock Moore got the Cherokees on the board first, picking off his first of two interceptions at the Central 40 yard line and racing it back for the pick six. Braxton Fox added the PAT for the 8-0 lead.
But the Chargers fired back on their next possession as the quarterback took a sweep 56 yards to the Greenback nine yard line. Three plays later, Central punched in the score. The PAT failed, but the Cherokee lead was reduced to two. Greenback's defense limited Central to that one big play, however, forcing a safety just after halftime when defensive tackle Jacob Martin got the sack in the Charger end zone. Linebacker Tanner LaForce added another interception for the Cherokee D later in the third quarter. The 'Kees added a late score when quarterback Tanner Hanley hit receiver Moore over the middle for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Fox's PAT cemented the final tally.
Greenback returns home Saturday to host Madisonville. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
