The Greenback Youth Football Organization (GYFO) hosted Madisonville on Saturday for the second regular-season matchup, and again dropped three decisions to the Tornadoes on a blustery cold Cooper Field.

Madisonville Crickets 22,
Greenback Crickets 20
In the tightest contest of the day, the Greenback squad (0-9) fell two points short with only seconds on the clock, failing to capture their first win of the season.
After trailing 6-0 through most of the first half, Greenback quarterback Holden Willis took the first snap of the second half 75 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed, but the youngest Cherokees tied the score.
The Tornadoes (4-5) responded in the fourth quarter, getting a touchdown and extra point to earn an eight-point lead. Once again, the feisty Cherokees fired back when Willis broke loose for a 50-yard strike. A pass from Willis to receiver Tyler Spires added the crucial PAT, and again Greenback tied the score.
On their next possession, Madisonville threw an interception to Willis, who then rumbled 75 yards for the go-ahead score, and it appeared the young Cherokees would find a way to win, leading 20-14.
But the Tornadoes drove the field in their final possession, punching in the tying score from the seven yard line. With the game on the line, the Cherokees were unable to stop the go-ahead PAT that sealed their ninth loss of the year.

Madisonville Hoppers 0,
Greenback Hoppers 24
The Greenback Hoppers (8-1) got off to a fast start scoring two of their four touchdowns in the first quarter on their way to a convincing victory over the struggling Tornadoes (1-8). Josh Edwards' 39-yard run led the way, and Breeden Gilbert scored on the next Cherokee possession with a 40-yard run. Tyler Cullen scored in the second quarter to put the Hoppers up by 18.
Edwards and the Cherokees struck again early in the third quarter with a rumbling 55-yard strike.
Leading the shutout effort for the Cherokees, Reese Plemons had seven tackles followed by Mason Sliger with five.

Madisonville Cutters 18,
Greenback Cutters 8
The 10- and 11-year-old Cherokees (2-7) fell behind 18-0 to the Tornadoes (1-8) before mounting a fourth-quarter comeback effort that ultimately fell short at the goal line.
Cherokee quarterback Hunter Willis completed a 50-yard touchdown strike to running back Kevin Ogle to put Greenback on the board. Another Willis-to-Ogle pass added the PAT, and Greenback cut the lead down to 18-8.
With under two minutes to play, Greenback took its next possession the distance of the field, but with first and goal from inside the five yard line, the Cherokees fumbled the ball away before time expired.

Madisonville Juniors 42,
Greenback Juniors 14
The second matchup this season between the Tornadoes (8-1) and the Cherokees (5-4) ended with another blowout loss for Greenback. Madisonville dominated both the offensive and defensive lines with some athletes outweighing the Cherokees by two to one.
Despite the size difference, Greenback managed a fierce struggle in the early going, forcing consecutive turnovers on downs. But the Tornadoes simply out-muscled the Cherokees, finally taking control of the game in the second quarter.
Greenback managed a third quarter touchdown run by wingback Hunter McCarter that rolled 45 yards.
In the fourth quarter, the Cherokees added to their point total as tailback Jordan Anderson broke loose for a score. Braxton Fox added the PAT.

Saturday, Greenback travels to Riceville for the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
