For the first time in program history, the Lenoir City Panthers lost to the Farragut Admirals Friday night. The Admirals, likely already angry after a tough loss to Maryville last week, piled up 439 total yards of offense as they cruised to a 42-7 win over the Panthers at Cecil Thomas Field.
"They're a good football team. They beat us in every phase of the game," Lenoir City Head Coach Mike Zeller said after the game.
Farragut led from the outset as the Admirals took the ball to open the game at their own 20 yard line and drove 80 yards in 11 plays. The Panther defense took Farragut to third down on both of the opening sets of drives, but the visitors converted on both and eventually quarterback Reese Browning found Braden Urevik in the right side of the end zone for the touchdown. Christian Ponce hit the point after and Farragut led 7-0.
The opening possession for Lenoir City didn't go as well, as the Panthers gained three yards on the first two plays and then freshman quarterback Jordan Hall took a sack to set up fourth down. The LC punt gave way to Farragut's offense, which drove 46 yards in seven plays. Montre Hudson capped off the drive with a 10 yard run up the middle and Ponce's point after put Farragut up 14-0 late in the first quarter.
Another three and out by the Lenoir City defense set up another punt and Farragut scored quickly off of it. On the first play of the drive from their own 43, Browning found Lee Van Dyne on an outside hitch route and the senior receiver turned up field and raced 57 yards for the score. Ponce once again hit the PAT and Farragut's lead grew to 21-0 still in the first quarter.
Lenoir City moved the chains for the first time in the game when Hall connected with Matt Studwell in the flat for 10 yards and a first down. The Panther offense went three and out from there, though, which ended the first quarter and set up the fourth score of the game for the Admirals.
It took two plays this time, but Browning recorded his third touchdown of the game when he found David Allen slanting across the middle and the fourth-year receiver took the route up the middle to the end zone for a 53 yard touchdown. Ponce hit yet another PAT and Farragut stretched its advantage to 28-0.
The Panthers got a second first down on the ensuing drive but could only move the ball 23 yards before punting for the fourth time.
The Lenoir City defense held firm on this drive, however, as Chris Bass coughed up the ball and LC's Preston Craig fell on it at the Panther 31. Lenoir City got a bit of a drive going on the next drive, as Hall orchestrated a 29-yard drive, but the Panthers ended the drive when they failed to convert a fourth and six from the Farragut 40.
Four plays later, the Admirals were back in the end zone when Taino Perez punched in the ball from 18 yards out. Ponce hit the PAT to put Farragut up 35-0 and kick the mercy rule into effect. The Admirals got their final touchdown on their first drive of the second half when Cody Rule took in a six-yard TD run to cap a five-play, 68-yard drive. The point after extended Farragut's lead to the largest of the night – 42 points.
It was all Lenoir City from there, however, as the Panthers got their only score on a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Hall connected on six of seven passes on the drive, including the touchdown pass to Wes D'Ooge in the back corner of the end zone from 20 yards out. Cook hit the PAT and Lenoir City climbed to within 35.
"They weren't always a powerhouse, it took some time," Zeller said of Farragut. "So hopefully we can learn from this and decide that we don't want to play like this anymore." The Panthers (2-7, 1-5) will have one more game this season, senior night Friday night against Maryville.
